Volunteering

Join us in our award-winning open spaces for active, uplifting volunteering sessions. Our regular volunteer groups make a huge difference to parks and the local community across SE1. You don’t need any experience to join; just enthusiasm and the willingness to get stuck in!

Volunteer Gardening Sessions

Becoming a Gardening Volunteer is a great way to enjoy the outdoors in central London whilst learning new skills and meeting new people, all with the shared goal of improving the local community.

We consider everyone’s circumstances and design sessions that are supportive and safe for everyone involved. Tasks are suited to all levels of fitness and needs, from digging and planting to watering and seed sprinkling. We are an inclusive organisation that works to make our spaces and volunteering opportunities as accessible as possible to meet the needs of our diverse community. You’ll be welcomed into a friendly and supportive team.

To find out more and join the team - please email us at volunteer@bost.org.uk. You can find our Volunteer Gardener role description here. Referrals from other agencies are also welcome.

Crossbones Wardens

Crossbones Graveyard is a stone's throw away from London Bridge and was boarded up and closed to the general public for many years. Behind the hoardings is a post-medieval, un-consecrated pauper’s burial ground with the remains of an estimated 15,000 people buried there.

Since January 2015 local people have been working with Bankside Open Spaces Trust to create a public garden there. The site has great local and London-wide significance as a non-denominational, non-judgmental place where the ‘outcast dead’ can be remembered. We have visitors that travel from all over to visit this unique and emotive site.

Crossbones is opened thanks to the generosity of Volunteer Wardens who give their time to supervise and be a welcoming and informative presence whilst the garden is open to the public.

If you are interested in becoming a warden please email us at volunteer@bost.org.uk. You can find our Crossbones Warden role description here.

Volunteer at Bankside Open Spaces Trust events

Throughout the year we host fun events to encourage people to enjoy time outside and get to know their community better. In June we hold our biggest event, Bankside Open Spaces Festival – a fantastic free all-day street party in the heart of London, filled with live music, performances, and activities for the whole family. We also run smaller events and activities, such as an Easter treasure hunt, a Halloween craft session and a Christmas gathering with wreathmaking.

Event volunteers play an important role in creating a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone and we are grateful for any support people can give us. If you would like to get involved and to find out more information, please email us at volunteer@bost.org.uk.

All our volunteer groups are led by experienced gardeners with tasks designed to suit everyone.
