St George’s Garden
A quiet walled garden with a surprising history
At the end of traffic-ridden Borough High Street, this park was opened on the site of an old graveyard serving the historic church of Saint George The Martyr. It has as its northern boundary the original wall of Marshalsea Prison where Charles Dickens’s father was incarcerated and which forms the backdrop for much of his novel Little Dorrit.
This small but well proportioned open space has undergone an inspiring upturn in its fortunes since it fell into neglect some years ago. A dedicated group of volunteers were helped by BOST and funded by Southwark Council to transform the site into the highly agreeable urban oasis that it is today.
