Gambia Street Garden

From a road to a garden space

Gambia Street was transformed from a road to a garden space in 2003/2004. Previously, Gambia Street was heavily used by commuter traffic avoiding Blackfriars Road, giving rise to loud early morning noise. With funding from Southwark Council and in consultation with BOST, local residents and businesses, the road was closed to traffic and made greener with twisted willow trees, climbing plants and raised planting areas. Seating and new lighting were also installed, and the children's play area improved with new equipment.

Once the landscaping was finished, BOST and the local residents gradually planted the raised beds with herbs, sweet-smelling flowers and grasses. With BOST's support, local residents continue to tend and plant the beds, ensuring an all-year round display of greenery and colour.
